Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 4 slices thick-cut bread (like sourdough or French bread)
  • 3 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (for toast)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Prep the Garlic Toast: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with 1 clove of minced garlic. Spread the garlic butter evenly onto one side of each slice of bread. Place the bread butter-side up on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  • Cook the Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary. Add the 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
  • Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  • Assemble the Open Face Sloppy Joes: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted garlic bread slices. If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top. Return the baking sheet to the oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

Notes

Pro Tips: Use fresh garlic for the best flavor in your toast. For extra richness, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. Toast the bread just before assembling to keep it crispy. Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven to maintain crispiness. Variations: Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken. Add diced bell peppers for extra crunch. Top with a fried egg for added protein.
