Equipment

  • Large Skillet For cooking ground beef.
  • 9x13 inch Baking Dish For baking the casserole.
  • Aluminum Foil For covering during baking.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 to 5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 0.5 cup beef broth or water
  • 0.25 cup milk (optional, for creaminess)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned (5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat. Add onion and garlic; cook 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Spread beef mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Layer sliced potatoes on top. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika.
  • Sprinkle cheddar and Parmesan cheese over the beef. Pour beef broth around the edges. Drizzle with milk if using.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

Pro Tips: Slice potatoes thinly and evenly (about ⅛-inch) for even cooking. Pour beef broth around the edges to keep potatoes moist. Cover with foil for the first 30 minutes to trap moisture. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving to help it set. Add extra veggies like bell peppers or mushrooms for more nutrition. This casserole freezes beautifully for up to 3 months.
