Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh strawberries, hulled
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4-5 lemons)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 4 cups cold water, divided
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed
  • 1 tbsp honey or simple syrup (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Lemon slices and fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  • Prep the strawberries: Rinse the strawberries under cold water and hull them. Cut into quarters and place in a blender or food processor.
  • Make strawberry puree: Blend the strawberries until smooth. For a smoother texture, strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve to remove seeds. Set aside.
  • Prepare simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of water and granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. This makes about 1/2 cup of simple syrup.
  • Muddle basil: In a large pitcher, gently muddle the basil leaves with a wooden spoon or muddler to release their oils and aroma.
  • Combine ingredients: Add the strawberry puree, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the pitcher. Pour in the remaining 3 1/2 cups of cold water and stir well to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness with honey or additional simple syrup if needed.
  • Chill and serve: Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Serve over ice, garnished with lemon slices and fresh basil leaves.

Notes

Pro Tips: Use ripe, juicy strawberries for the best flavor. Muddle the basil gently to release its aroma without bitterness. Chill all ingredients before mixing for a crisp, cold drink. For a smoother texture, strain the strawberry puree before adding to the lemonade. Adjust sweetness to taste with simple syrup or honey.Storage: Store in an airtight pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir well before serving as ingredients may settle.Variations: Add a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy version. Swap strawberries for raspberries or blackberries. For a boozy twist, add a shot of vodka or gin to each glass.
