  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup caramel sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream together softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Gently fold in chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  • Press half the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Drizzle caramel sauce over this layer.
  • Drop spoonfuls of remaining dough over the caramel layer and gently spread to cover.

  • Use parchment to lift bars out. Sprinkle with sea salt if desired. Cut into bars and serve.

Notes

Pro Tips: The secret to perfectly gooey bars is to not overbake them – remove from the oven when the top is golden. Line your pan with parchment paper for easy removal. Do not overmix the dough to keep the bars tender. The sprinkle of sea salt is essential – it balances the sweetness and elevates the entire dessert. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before slicing for clean, neat squares.
