Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup red, white, and blue sprinkles (plus extra for topping)
  • 1 box instant vanilla pudding mix (3.4 oz)
  • 1 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1 tub whipped topping (8 oz), thawed
  • red gel food coloring
  • blue gel food coloring

Instructions

  • Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
  • Mix Cake Batter: In a large bowl, combine the white cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth. Fold in 1/2 cup of sprinkles.
  • Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  • Poke Holes: Once the cake is cooled, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake, about 1 inch apart.
  • Prepare Pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the vanilla pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes until thickened. Divide the pudding into three equal parts. Leave one part white, tint one part red with gel food coloring, and tint the last part blue.
  • Fill Holes: Spoon the red, white, and blue pudding mixtures alternately into the holes in the cake, filling them completely. Spread any remaining pudding over the top of the cake.
  • Add Topping: Spread the thawed whipped topping evenly over the top of the cake. Sprinkle with extra red, white, and blue sprinkles for a festive look.
  • Chill: Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the pudding to set.

Notes

Pro Tips: Use gel food coloring for brighter colors. Chill the cake for 30 minutes before poking holes to prevent crumbling. For extra flair, top with whipped cream and fresh berries. Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Variations: Swap vanilla pudding for cheesecake flavor. Add a layer of strawberry jam for extra fruity flavor. Use white chocolate pudding for a richer taste.
